Decided to post in OTP as it's tech news and not about specific game.

http://gizmodo.com/5593116/were-pc-game ... ng-project

Quote:
I've heard from reliable sources that during the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game... and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their "console" controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse.
The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative

I expected nothing less. Mouse point & click is much easier than controlling a joystick.

I'm actually not surprised, PC gaming is a lot more fluid, easy to control, and give you better and more accurate reaction.

I am sad thought that because of this the Project was effectively killed. I would love to have gamed Cross Platform. I hope that they can somehow correct the problem and give us a chance...

Correct it maybe by giving console gamers a Handicap? =D

In shooters this is to be expected, in a lot of other games it isn't.
I still don't understand why they just won't launch Xbox/PS/any other console with a mouse and a keyboard. It would combine the best of both worlds. I would certainly buy it, and I think a ton of other PC gamers would love to just pay ~$300 every ~3 years instead of buying $1k computers every 3 years.

Is there any word out as to why you can't use keyboard + mouse on PS/Xbox? (Besides the keyboard+mouse advantage..)

This is actually really old news.

Back when UT3 came out it was supposed to have the ability to let people play against console players, but they never implemented it because of obvious differences in playing ability.

I've joined a few games on halo2 pc where random people were testing this. Basically teams of xbox controllers(has aim assist) vs mouse and keyboards(no aim assist)and both teams would switch controller devices every few games and mix up teams. Keyboard+mouse usually won(xbox controller team won a few times when bunch of nubs were on mouse and keyboards team). The common theme was that the mouse users could always turn around faster and overall respond to gun fights much much quicker.

No PC gamer worth a shit would want anything to do with consolers. So with that said, have fun with CS, MW2 and BC2 players.

it could have also been because how easily hackable pc games are. Even tho mw2 on xbox360 has tons of hacks/cheaters, it would be even worse if pc gamers were allowed in.

I read this comment

Quote:
Here's an idea - make the PC users use an Xbox 360 controller when playing against Xbox players. Problem solved.

wat

Anyhow as mentioned it was obvious that a keyboard and mouse would win it with a giant leap. If they were smart they'd still allow the cross platform, but with settings hurr durr. Same version(console/PC) or mixed. I'm wondering how Portal 2 is ganna work with this. That is if Gabe meant cross platform for the PS3 as the 'best console version'.

It's not that simple. I played Need for speed underground on ps2 vs pc players. The pc players were able to play the game much faster(probably like 120+ fps) while the console version felt like 30 fps. While in the process it helped the pc players because they were able to out race the console players. In a drag race, they would be getting 17-ish seconds while consolers could only push 19-ish seconds at the lowest. Ps2 player basically could not compete even when the exact same cars because how fast the pc hardware was compared to the ps2. This wasn't even a mouse vs controller issue.

This happens all the time on cod4 PC where ppl with 250fps(most competitive configs) easily dominate anybody running under 80-60 fps. It's just the game responds much much faster at higher fps's.

^^^This

Why people think that using two joysticks to control up/down and left/right is better is beyond me. Especially the fanboys. Console gaming is really only better when it comes to hanging out with friends. You can't really have fun with friends when there is only one computer.

imo controllers are easier to use, but mouses are much more accurate and precise. I suck with a mouse.

Not necessarily better, but their computers give them an advantage over consoles.

How exactly is it win? You have a more limited, non-customisable console, playing the exact same role that a computer does and it's limited in both functionality and compatibility. If your going to do that simply to verse PC gamers, why not just build a PC? They aren't nearly as expensive to build as people think, not to mention the increased functionality that a PC provides. I play consoles because I want to relax on my bed with a controller and have a more relaxing experience. If I want to be serious and competitive, I play something on the computer where I am sitting upright and have more focus. Seems logical enough to me -shrugs-

Because you will end up topping the board everytime.
Note; I do not have a PS3, but my friend has his keyboard and mouse linked to his Ps3. :D First time I played there I was topping the board already :/ While on the pc I'm happy if I'm 4-5th :D

This! I've spent so much time arguing with my friends which is better but goddamn they're stubborn, I don't see how you can play fps or any type of game for that matter on a console. I've tried it and I hated it.

PC

Check the release date for UT3.

Even then, the article mentions the decision was made "many months ago."

I +1 this. I hae played MW2 on both Xbox and PC, and I didn't mind playing on PC. PC is a lot more 'free-range' movement with your hands I guess lol - With the mouse, and you can customise the buttons to suit how you like it.
