That dell laptop still has an older CPU, the norm now for laptops is i3-i5.

edit:
won't let me link to bestbuy.com..not sure why

anyway look for any core i3 or core i5 15.4" laptop from bestbuy/futureshop and you'll be getting a much better deal than the dell. They were listed on the 3rd page of laptops for me @ bestbuy.com

edit2:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Lapt ... Id=1257181

figured it out, here's an example =p

I'd get a netbook.

Anything that a standard laptop can do that a netbook can't, a standard laptop can't do very well or not worth doing at all.

Wait until black friday and pay $150-200?

true that, but it was mainly for example purposes. I'm guessing he's from USA anyway.

From what I've seen prices online are higher than that of bestbuy/futureshop/costco etc. It's also easier to get issues fixed if you buy it from a store rather than online, just my experience.

I don't know much about this stuff but don't buy any laptop from Fujitsu Siemens. I really regret buying this piece of garbage.

In my opinion, gaming laptops are useless. People should game on their desktop computers; the main purpose of a laptop is to have a lot of mobility (low weight, durability, and at least 4 hours of battery life are mandatory features for me). I, for one, do not understand people who get Alienware gaming laptops, or any other crap like that. You pay much more for the mobility of the platform, yet you never really make use of the mobility you pay for, compared to a standard desktop PC.

@OP:
I'm not saying people should just buy 10" netbooks, but, IMO, anything larger than 15" is too large. 14" is a good laptop size (i own a Lenovo ThinkPad T400, and it's small, light, and very portable), and 15" is right on the edge (my ThinkPad T510 is, in fact, 15,6", and has 1600 x 900 resolution. The resolution is very good, but, overall, the laptop is almost a little bit too large).

And, yeah, Dell is okay for that price range, I guess. ThinkPads are always better, but they cost a little bit more. The MacBook Air is pretty much the ideal laptop, IMO, but I would only buy it if it cost $750 or less, not $1000. With its current price tag and performance, I wouldn't buy it. I just feel that low voltage Core2Duo just doesn't quite cut it, sometimes.

You make a good case but I still prefer the laptop over the Desktop PC. I can easily grab my LT and head over to my friends house to LAN party. Its useful when I'm at airports mid travel checking mail. Power is not even an issue since there's almost always a power outlet wherever I go. Also when I had a desktop I hated all the wires hanging out the back creating a bird's nest. Plus it took up too much space as well.

I know the price factor makes a ton of sense for what you are saying. But I don't notice the difference in performance when I'm on my LT and when I had a Desktop. Yes there is probably a big difference in component performance between the two but its barely noticeable to the human eye. I mean...when I play my games or watch movies I don't notice it at all.

Wow, that's awesome. My school almost hasn't got any plugs, anywhere, and the wireless school network is so badly configured, that I managed to hack into the school server with ease. Hell, the WLan doesn't even have a password. I even left them a message there, telling them to fix their security issues, and they didn't.

Third world countries FTL. :(
