Heya SRF'ers.

I know we've had a couple of poker threads in here but none of them really got big and they were mainly focussed on specific kinds of poker or specific poker sites (for example: facebook / everlast poker only).

Therefor i'dd like this to be a general poker thread where any kind of poker, any poker site (or real life experience) is welcome.

In this thread you can:

~Post possible hands:

-You post your hand pre-flop and continuation to this hand, show us how it worked out and why you did what you did.
-Post hands that failed in an important fase.
Our more experienced players can explain what was done 'wrong' and why; this will keep others from making the same mistakes. constructive criticism only (no one will get better from random bashing).

~General poker tips: for people who are interested, but not yet playing poker.

~Starters questions: have your questions explained to you in detail.

~Friends requests for existing poker rooms and the possibility to play with other SRF members

----Poker types for 'Hold em in a nut shell:----

-Fixed limit: You can only bet and raise to a certain amount, small in the first rounds, bigger in the later rounds.

-No Limit: The name basicly sais it all doesn't it ? There's no limit to your bet or raise sizes here, you can lose all your money in a single hand or win big amounts.

-Sit and Goes: Sit and Goes are small tournaments, here you pay to buy yourself into the tournament and can win money when you end in the top.

----Basic poker rules:----

----The hands----

Every poker hand consists of 5 cards.
From best to worst they're arranged as shown below:

-Royal Flush.................Ten Image, JackImage, QueenImage, KingImage, and AceImage, all of the same suit.

-Straight Flush.............. Six Image, SevenImage, EightImage, NineImage, TenImage, five connecting cards, all of the same suit.

-Four of a Kind.............. JackImage, JackImage, JackImage, Jack Image, threeImage, just like the name implies.

-Full House................. KingImage, KingImage, KingImage, FiveImage, FiveImage, a pair and a three of a kind combined.

-Flush........................... SixImage, ThreeImage, AceImage, JackImage, SevenImage, five cards of the same suit.

-Straight..................... FourImage, FiveImage, SixImage, SevenImage, EightImage, five connecting cards of any suit.

-Three of a Kind...... QueenImage, QueenImage, QueenImage, TwoImage, TenImage, Three of the same cards and two random cards.

-Two Pair....................... JackImage, JackImage, FourImage, FourImage, AceImage, just as the name sais, two pairs and one 'random' card.

-Pair.................................. AceImage, AceImage, fiveImage, SevenImage, JackImage, Two of the same cards and three random cards.

-High card........................ KingImage, SixImage, EightImage, ThreeImage, JackImage, When you have no 'hand' at all, your highest card is what counts.

For all these hands count: if an other player has the same sort of hand, the highest end one wins or if they're both just as high the one with the highest random card wins.
(A three of a kind in Aces will always win over a three of a kind in Ten's, but if two players both have a three of a kind in five's, the highest random card besides these is what counts).

More (perhaps less basic) info can be posted, any ideas for improvements or add on's are welcome too.

(If this thread belongs in other games, thats fine too, feel free to move it.)

I would go with any card i mean, seriously. I know there is more chance to win with high cards, so it doesn't matter if you have a A and a K, when the table shows random cards as 3 7 4 7 9 lol

I still think it's about a little strategy (to guess what cards might the other player have according to the table and their bets), to think wisely about the bet (if you should raise it or not, or going all in) and a BUNCH OF LUCK.

When you have a good hand - make your opponent think you have a bad hand.

When you have a bad hand - make your opponent think you have a good hand - or fold.

LOL, no. Just keep it. Yeah, but it doesn't matter how good your hand is if the table (forgot the name) doesn't have good cards tho. Unless you are lucky and win by high card.

When you have an excellent hand, you try to make others waste as much of their chips as you can.
You know you'll nearly always be the one winning if it comes to a showdown, so you dont go all in right away (when you've given off a really agressive image and go all in with a lot of your hands, and know others might go along you can try).
You try to bet an amount that others would be willing to go along with, multiple times (players are less likely to throw away their hands if they allreaddy 'invested' a lot in the pot).
If the players that go along with you at the flop are pretty agressive players, you can even check, so that they will place the bets (and think they're having the better cards).

Example:

You have: Ace, Ace

You bet three or four times the big blind and one extra big blind for every player that calls before the flop (possibly a bit more or less, depending on how well of a read you have on your opponents, remember that you'll be betting to make them go ALONG with you afterall, not to make them fold).

Lets say the small blind is at 25 and the big blind is 50, you're in a late position at the table.
One person before you called, you raise to 250 chips (4x 50, and one 50 for the player before you that called).
The person after you, the small blind decides to call your raise and the person before you folds.

The flop gives you : Six, Two, Ten. Lets asume they're not of the same suit, so there are no flush or straight (draws) possible.

You still have an Overpair: your pair is higher than any of the cards that came on the flop.
You bet an other 200 chips, not a great amount compared to the pot.
The small blind calls you again.

The turn gives you a third Ace, your hand would now pretty much beat practicly any hand.
The small blind checks, you raise 800 chips (depending on your, and your opponents stack size, ofcource).
The small blind allreaddy put in a decent amount of his chips into the pot, he'dd go along if his stack size isnt to big, if he has enough chips left he can still fold it.

Either way, you've got the maximum out of your hand.
As you see the idea is to tempt other players to go along with you, even though you're nearly sure to outplay them.

If you show your hand, no one will be willing to go along ofcource, they'dd know their hand is worse than yours and fold.
If you go all in right away, most players will fold aswell, unless you're known to be a bluffer // dont have to big of a stack.

stop betting aggressively on Ax hands where x is not J+, it's retarded and you will lose money, that's the only tip I'll offer.

Unless you're in the last fase of a sit and go i guess.
Just went all in with a king + ten, push or fold fase, guy calls my All-In.
Flop brings a King, a queen and a six, looking fine for me.
turn brings a seven, river brings a god forsaken Ace xD
The player that went along with me had an ace, so yeah- ended third in this one.
Cant be avoided i guess.

I sure dont, but if you have 1100 chips and the big blind is 400, while there are only 3 players left including yourself, you just need to play more hands (if that was even aimed at me).

no i just said that as a general statement, in that situation its fine.

Its more you just start a tourney and everyone goes all in until they get out, which in some cases can be a while which really screws you over.

Yeah, its heavely annoying when everyone just pushes their stack all in on whatever offsuit shitty hands they have, pre-flop.

Then again, in the end you'dd probs end up with a complete amateur with a big stack (the luckiest shover), who you can pluck empty with a bit of luck.

Thats the problem with watching WPT on TV lately... Bunch of kids get into the tournament by winning on the internet tournaments, then start going big bets on hands that are rediculuous, and get lucky enough to still win. While its nice that the final table isn't always the same names over and over, the way they get there is just retarded.

IMO, the hardest part of poker is to play in a manner that you always will lose a minimum amount of chips when you fold/lose the hand, yet see the most cards.
As the guy said above, its a good strategy to re-raise preflop when you have a good hand and a nice position, but I don't know how many times I've seen that turn against the person who re-raised.
You never know what cards will show up!

Poker is a risky game, but you can minimise the risk by playing a safe strategy.
In the long run, playing somewhat safe will reward ALOT more than playing super aggresive
and only winning big pots once in a while and going backrupt 3/4th of the time.

As for never going with Ax where x is below J, thats BS.
You can go aggressive with any hand, just gotta pick the right moment.

My tip: As long as you can afford the blind, you should always go see the flop!

For sure, playing it safe pays off in the end, even if you have to fold a lot of hands that 'look' somewhat appealing.

Today in the final 3 of a Sit and Go i had some very generous hands though xD
Guy went all in with KK, i had AA and won it with a two pair, as the community cards gave us a 66.
Next hand, i bet 4x BB with an other AA (yeah, what are the chances), guy that just lost his all in to me, goes along again (his chipstack is slightly smaller than mine at this point).
At the flop we get a few cards good for no one (a jack as a high card).
I go with a continuation bet of 1200 (while my stack was about 4,5k.. and his about 3,8).
He calls it, river gives a third ace, i go all in. he folds >.<
To bad i couldn't see what hand he had in the end, but that must've sucked for him ;P
Then again, it's kind of odd to fold after having put about 2/3 of his stack into the pot >.>

Low limit plays often end up in really weird ways xD
