I'd like to know where you guys live that it's illegal to carry a knife. It's not like a gun which has basically one or two uses - kill something or target shooting - a knife has multiple things it can cut. Cutting a human being isn't on my to-do list. England. We have a lot of knife crime.

I don't agree...what if those people he was threatening was a threat to him? Sometimes its best if some people think you're a mental case....they won't see you as easy prey.

Some of us here grow up in a different environment. So I can understand why some of you guys think it's not really a good thing to be relying on a knife for defense. I'd rather be prepared to at least show that I will inflict some life threatening damage than find myself cornered waiting to be gutted like a pig after they've already taken my wallet.

I know in a lot of places, a blade over 3 in. is considered illegal. Small knives are useful. Anything bigger you really shouldn't be toting around unless you're an A) douche, B) Permanently hunting that tricky rabbit.
I've considered getting one for work, but we already have trauma scissors in the bag, and everyone else I work with has a knife so I'm the only one that brings along a pocket flashlight.

I carry my Spyderco Persistance at all times, ever since someone was stabbed in a park 4 times near my house. But I use it in every day situations, at work for cutting boxes, rope, opening packaging, etc.

Knifes will not work as self defense.
You stab someone in "self defense" .. you go to jail. Going out with a knife.. and stabbing someone, whether in self defense or not.. you wont stand a chance.
And as i say.. against dangerous people, taking a knife with you will not help. They will not be intimidated by it.. if anything they will take it as a challenge.
If someone attacks you.. you either run or if its just a typical chav you man up and fight them back without weapons.
(To those of you who are saying you use a knife as self defense. Have you ever been chased / attacked and found a knife to help you? I already know the answer.)

(To those of you who are saying you use a knife as self defense. Have you ever been chased / attacked and found a knife to help you? I already know the answer.) Yes I've seen many times someone used a knife to deter their attacker (even multiple attackers)..The people involved some of them I know basically showed that they will take your life if you try to take theirs and it worked.
Even baseball bats I've seen used to deter attackers.....I don't think we should all be walking around with knives but I won't deny that it can help you out in a hairy situation.....
whether your fist..a knife...a rock...an iron pipe..frying pan..a piece of 2x4.etc...all these can be used and have been used in many instances and have worked in some cases...

Lol you're quite wrong..and very situational. If someone is looking to mug you I think they'd much rather back down than face someone with a knife. But hey you seem to know what every single person is thinking Quote: They will not be intimidated by it.. if anything they will take it as a challenge. It's legal to bear arms in some places as well, but no one is intimidated by a gun and would take it as a challenge obviously..

Ok.. so what if the guy isn't deterred by the knife. Your going to stab them? Have fun with that.

That's hardly relevant to the point that MANY PEOPLE would back down from a knife threat. And hey if you really got into a fight where would you rather be? With or without the advantage? I'd stab the hell out of someone if it meant saving my own life in this case. I don't see what is so hard to understand about that. And the part where I mock you about guns is a clear play on how you seem to know what everyone will do at any given time...has nothing to do with how a gun compares to a knife.

If the stabbed person dies.? Even if he was threatening to kill you. Well, You would ruin your entire life. No?

So you'd rather die yourself than put up a fight? Great logic there...
If someone is willing to get past the fact that you have a deadly weapon and still comes after you it's very likely that they are looking to cause you major harm or death. But hey if you want to die without putting up a fight that's your decision.
And please note that killing someone in self defense does not mean you go to jail for murder, it is very situational.

But hey if you want to die without putting up a fight that's your decision. Meh.. Of course not. But it's not that simple. Well, everyone don't carry a knife... and I definitely don't want to. Btw: You can learn techniques of real self-defense. You know! Azilius wrote: And please note that killing someone in self defense does not mean you go to jail for murder, it is very situational. Well, most likely you wont go to jail if you can prove you killed in self-defense.

And please note that killing someone in self defense does not mean you go to jail for murder, it is very situational. Police wouldnt see it as self defence. They would call you a moron for going into public places with a knife.. and say you went out with intent to use it. And no.. i wouldnt stab someone. If i felt i was in a life / death situation.. i would run.. not stab someone. Some people get in fights / bad situations quite often (i've been in a few). People who bring weapons into it are idiots.

I don't know why you think the world is out to get anyone who carries a knife. Why is anyone a moron for going in a public place with a knife? It's legal..and considering how it's hidden in your pocket no one would know if you had it or not. The police can't just "say you went out with intent to use it". They would need proof, a background history of you doing such things, etc. But again you seem to know the future and what everyone will say/do at any given moment.. Also not everyone is able to run away, this situation doesn't just apply to you and you alone.

Muggers often carry knifes aswell though. You have no idea how dirty they can be. If you're assaulted by a guy with the intention to wreck you / kill you... you'dd better be willing to use a knife if you're carrying one. Even if you do kill him and have no possible way to prove it was self defence, i'dd rather take my chances and not report it, hoping that i wont be found by the cops, than possibly having to lose my life by a half hearted try of 'lets hope i can run faster than he can, otherwise my death will surely be painfull'. Can tell you a real life situation about a mugging, that happend to a friend of mine. I've seen enough people that are so damn messed up that i wouldn't even have seconds thoughts about stabbing one of them if truely needed.
