OMFG... Isn't that farked up?
Quote:
Runes of Magic player "augustus87" has somehow managed to hack the game's database and is demanding its German owners to meet his demands -- in the meantime he'll be holding the information he's taken from the database hostage.
The player has hacked the servers of the game's Western owners, Frogster. He's claimed that he currently has the data of over 3.5 million users, and will release it in waves until his demands are met.
He has quite a lot of demands, most notably being better security for its users (I'd say irony, but I don't need to tell you), Frogster easing up on the forum's strict moderation methods -- or so he claims them to be strict. There are in total 7 demands, his full statement can be found below.
As many of you are already aware, we have all fallen victim to a virtual attack.
An anonymous attacker has threatened to release log-in data unless his terms are met. He is demanding that forum communication practices and technical aspects of Runes of Magic operation be changed. To support his claim, the attacker has already posted the log-in details of approx. 2,100 accounts to the forum. To protect the affected players, the posts in question were naturally removed immediately and secured as evidence. The attack constitutes a serious criminal offence, and we immediately informed the German State Office of Criminal Investigation and pressed charges.
It is important to note that the data released was outdated log-in data from 2007, long before our comprehensive password reset initiative. Nevertheless, we immediately blocked the relevant accounts (account management, forum, and game access) of the affected players for their protection. Accounts changed by you after the password reset have not been affected thus far.
We promptly assembled a task force and are of course making every effort to get to the bottom of this incident. We are utilising every means at our disposal to minimise the damage and to prevent such threats in the future. We have already implemented additional security measures today. As soon as all the necessary steps have been taken with regard to operational and criminal processes, we will inform you of further developments on this matter.
This incident is very distressing to all of us. It is targeted not only at Frogster as a company, but also at Runes of Magic as a virtual biosphere and at you as players. We are always open to constructive suggestions. However, giving your opinion on blackmail and extortion is surely not the correct approach.
In conclusion, you may rest assured that all players not affected by the attack can log in to the game and play without any problems or hindrance. Should you have any remaining questions on this matter, you can always count on the Community Management team for advice. Just send them a PM and they will gladly assist you.

Most of these F2P games are poorly managed and very little is done for the community that supports them....I'm all for what this kid has done...100%....I really wished this happened to SRO as well..........These money hungry parasites that publish these games care only for one thing...the bottom line....They will cut corners in every aspect...and they often do with game security and management.....I can't blame hackers....I blame these publishers...

I still play the game...(haven't played since my last post)...But I have a love hate relationship with it....I love SRO....I despise how its managed...or should I say lack there of....If hackers did the same thing to SRO it would surely forced Joymax to do the right thing...or stand to loose everything......
If hackers got their hands on everyone's info and ruin the game they'd be doing the game a favor since it's riddled with cheaters....It'll either have to restart or be terminated..both of which I'd be fine with

I'm starting to wonder just how serious this is. I can't find any topics about the attack or what's currently going on at runes of magic forum. Their forum isn't buzzing with news of the event. Maybe the mods over there working overtime? removing all references of the attack?
