Iv overclocked my computer 23% on the graphics and just under 20% on the processor but i want more.

I am using stock coolers and the processor/gfx are

nvidia 450 gts 1gb
amd phenom II 965 BE

what coolers are about for a lowish budget that would allow me to gain an extra 5% or so

maybe a noob question, but can you also overclock laptops?

I'm sure you can, but definitely not a smart thing to do lol.

i guess you can hack the case open and have a custom cooler poking out underneath or something...

same principles as on a computer though keep gpu under 70 and cpu just keep an eye on it as its used more often then a gpu

My crossfired 5770's never go above 60C under heavy load...70's a tad 2 high dont u think? (stock cooler, and OC'ed at around 10%)

got my cpu from 2.6 to 3.2 and there is still some head room if I wanted to go for more.

Keeps my CPU below 30C

70 is fine going over it is a problem



i got mine to 3.9ghz without a problem 4ghz was a bit harder has to up the voltage but with that been said i could maybe get 4.2 and up the voltage to say 1.47 up from 1.4 maybe 1.5v i dunno but im not sure with upping the voltage so atm im playing it safe its very stable and im happy

My gaming laptop has an easy overclock in my bios, and an advanced section, I think the max overclock on easy setting though only ups it by 200mhz


You're trying to overclock lower end stuff

You're not gonna get much more if you're already overclocking at that much


I'd test for artifacts and system stability though before you invested into more cooling

iv stressed test for 2hours on the processor and about 3 hours on the gpu, there has been no performace drop and no visible errors

sure it may be lower end stuff but i cant afford anything more so id like to get as much as i can out of it without stablity loss i will upgrade to i7 next but again money is an issue so this is what i have

So you plan to risk killing your hardware for a tiny bit of a performance gain?

2.6 to 3.2 is a big gain so it has a huge increase in performance.but 3.9 to 4? If you are hitting you max I wouldn't push it over the edge.

3.4 technically 3.9 was stable 4 i needed to up the voltage slightly to make it stable

but considering an average overclock is 20% thats slightly less then 20% its actually 17.65% increase 10mhz over but cba to work it out any closer i did 23% on my gfx without a single problem

maybe with cooling i can get the extra out of my cpu and be happy, aslong as im careful as i go i wont damage my hardware, if im reckless then ofc you are

what more do you want to do, I'm sure you can play any game, and do bout anything, why risk damaging your stuff

better fps is never a bad thing sure the overclock wont mean i jump up to the next tier of gfx settings but will mean i get 4/5 more frames if im lucky

As for damaging my kit im not gona ramp it up and hope for the best il take it up slowly and see how the system handles it for both stability and heat if things get too hot or not stable drop it down not that hard

a .01ghz over clock isn't going to get you more then 3 fps.

no the 0.01 was just the odd number at the end of my math going further beyond the point then 2 decimal places seemed silly to just prove a point then 17.65%

also 0.01 wont even get 1 fps on the prccessor

why do you need more than 90fps? hell even 120

how about 60? you know the max most LCD screens can do?

Stop overclocking the CPU and GPU. Try getting the RAM up before you change the voltages.

Don't oc .... unless you intend to replace this machine in a year that is.

well mine is 120, but back when I had 60, i noticed 100+ fps and it was nice, but obviously not needed

i have 4gb of coursiar Dominator so ram is pretty good, will get more but as it costs a lot iv left it dont want 2 different brands of ram in the system

and love i do intend to replace in a year or least try

also id like to add im on aboud 55ish constant fps now on cod black ops which is the game im playing most atm so trying to get the extra 5 fps without dropping settings

If you're talking about in a desktop you're completely wrong. GPU's are rated for over 100 degrees. My 285gtx hit's 95~ while playing the more intense games (happened yesterday on crysis 2). I've had it for 2~ years and zero problems.




Been overclocking my Q6600 from 2.4 GHz -> 3.2 or 3.6 depending, and it's been running smoothly for 3 years so far. 1 Year? What?




Perhaps the multitude of new generation games that are limited by the CPU and not the GPU at higher resolutions? I can't play some games on max @ 2.4 GHz, but I can on 3.6 GHz.

Not only games but programs that are very CPU intensive do exist, movie rendering, etc.

cpus and gpus are rated to 100 but for all intensive purposes its not good to run them over 70 for any long period of time if yours are running 95 for a prolong period it will cause damage no matter what you say

but in saying that your system is stil working so hey dont **** with what aint broken, this is more for people overclocking existing hardware you dont know how it will react

iv got a 22% overclock and mine runs at 72 under load why would i risk going higher

also the 480 onwards was harder to overclock due to high temps the 5xx cards aint so bad more optimised

then again il just hands up admit i dont know much about overclocking other cards this is the first iv dabbled in overclocking so only know about whats good for my card as for cpu's they shouldnt go much over 70 so you can tell me otherwise but as i said before might work for you but is it good advice for others to hand out

on my cpu for example a 4.2ghz oc its recomended you have a water cooling loop for it, this isnt manufac recomendation as they dont recomend oc at all this is users/forums

so pushing beyond 4ghz is why i want cooling to keep it at that ideal range of under or just at 70 with load
