I been pretty aware of this for the longest time and didn't particularly mind but I been doing a fair bit of dling lately and it has become a problem and it's complete bullshit.

To elaborate this is what I pay for:

Spoiler!

It should be 5 mbps but yeah let's pretend this is acceptable ( 2nd visible tab shows same results ). So the actual problem is that I have this "2.5" mbps connection but when I dl stuff particularly games I am stuck with about 300 kbps, but that isnt even really my biggest complaint. My biggest complaint is that guess what happens when you dl 2 games at once ? 150 kbps each, so yeah I have a wonderful cap of around 300 kbps of actual useful connection.

Is pretty rediculous that I have this 2.5k mbps connection and when I have 2 dls/any dl action nearing that 300kbps number in the background like mentioned in the previous citation my connection is actually capped, yes actually capped, as an if I try to load a youtube video it will take somewhere around 4 minutes to buffer every minute ( normally it buffers ~x3 times faster than it plays ).

So the more productive part of this post now, do any of you know of any way of actually tapping or utilizing your connection to the fullest ? I just started looking into this so I don't know if it's possible, or not or if any random software can assist with this but I'll be seriously looking into it over the next couple of days, also when my contract is up I will be looking for a new IP.

Said whore IP: AT&T

IP = Internet Provider, for those who don't know.
1 mb = 1024kb, so I am receiving about 1/8 or 1/16 of the service I am paying for.

I've got AT&T as well.
Idk what plan or watever.

I get what my results show (of course disregarding DL limits when there are any.)

Spoiler!

I invite you to run a 4 game dl test as well. Start a dl, check dl speed; start a second check dl speed on both; start a 3rd and so on.

Let us know the results if you decide to do it, just randomly start 4 random f2p or AAA titles for it ( aion launcher can help you with this test in combination with the random f2p ).

I am a little confused. Run 4 games and check speed?

You do know you have one "pipe" for your internet right? What ever you buy for internet is the max you can use at a time. (Just making sure you know that.)

While at it might as well add location: California

Also the speed test is cool story bro but if I was getting my 2.5mbps I wouldn't had made this thread, try to at least question the issue I brought up ( which would be that IPs throttle dl speeds with games at least and perhaps youtube, test yours with actual games and/or random software to know if you share the same issue. Firefox can help monitor individual downloads quite easily with the default separate download window tracker ).

Wait wait I reread op's post.. Are you trying to say that the 2.5megaBIT connection should be a ~2500kb/sec download per second speed? I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say. If so a megabit is about .125 megabytes and that connection is about right. However since you are paying for a 5mbit connection and receiving only half I'd seriously contact your ISP.

Is that really Mb or is it Mbit? It's still too low even if it's Mbit but that would make a bit more sense.

first off notice it says Mb(Megabit). 1 Mb = 1/8 MB (MegaByte). So 2.5 / 8 = 0.3125 = 313KB. The rest of the speed can pretty much be blamed on internet traffic.

you're not really being ripped off :/. at the most you get 1/2 of what you pay for, not 1/16. And with traffic I'm not sure there's much you can do about it, other than simply switching to a better provider.

My provider claims it's 22 mbit/s for DL, and 4 mbit/s for UL.
It will soon be upgraded though(april 1st).

My ISP only throttles based on what i'm downloading. If it's bittorrent or any other P2P, it gets throttled down to about 10-15%.

So, instead I download games on steam and I use put.io. Both of these services don't get throttled so I download at 2MB/s - i'm on a 15 mbps connection so i'm rather content.

I felt like I should post this because people like to blame their ISPs when in fact they are just using misleading terminology:

Quote:
b stands for bit and B stands for byte. The difference between bit and byte can lead to confusion. In the context of data rate units, one byte refers to 8 bits. For example, when a 1 Mbps connection is advertised, it usually means that the maximum achievable download bandwidth is 1 megabit/s (million bits per second), which is actually 0.125 MB/s (megabyte per second), or about 0.1192 MiB/s (mebibyte per second).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_rate_units

tl;dr: ISPs post their rates in mbps which is roughly 1/8 of actual download speed. 8 mpbs or 8 Mb/s = 1 MB/s

This answers it, I was using wrong terminology/conversions and from there it just went downhill. I am also aware that IPs throttle P2P dls and I was going to mention it today in an effort to establish a connection between the two but alas I was going at it the wrong way, thanks for bringing light to the issue. Oh and one last quick comment, you can get around the usual P2P throttle by switching the port you are using.

I work for a service provider...I can tell you that there are days when you get what you paid for but those days are very rare...Congestion points in the network, sub-optimal equipment (Most providers don't get the latest and greatest equipment when they feel they haven't made a good return on investment on the existing equipment they have.....and since it still works why change it....a single transport switch can cost up to 0.5million. We bought 8 a few months ago)...

Peak usage time of day as everyone knows will affect users..... and other customers (especially businesses) who pay extra for "guaranteed" bandwidth will negatively affect you. Their data is of more importance than yours and will be prioritized as such...all these things will affect your bandwidth.....

Rather than upgrading their network to make sure you get what you paid for, service providers find ways (cheap ways) to make sure you at least get something reasonable..like half...but they do so knowing that you can still get what you paid for because there are times when their networks are less congested.

It's exactly 1/8. Both are actual download speeds, one in bits, one in bytes.

Let's clear a couple of things up...

Firstly, IP means Internet Protocol. ISP means Internet Service Provider. Learn the difference.

Secondly and probably most important is that just because it says 2.5Mb on there does NOT mean you will get to download at 2500Kb/s - ever. poehalcho summed that up very well: Mb(Megabit). 1 Mb = 1/8 MB (MegaByte). So 2.5 / 8 = 0.3125 = 313KB. The rest of the speed can pretty much be blamed on internet traffic.

Also, the majority of ISPs provide their service on the basis that it is "Upto 5Mb." That does not mean that you will get 5Mb. As your connection seems far too low to be a cable connection, I would assume this is the case for you.

Lempi I am inclined to call you a jackass, you could've very simply said this and added a worthy bit to the conversation:

Quote:
IP means Internet Protocol. ISP means Internet Service Provider.

You couldve added the "Learn the difference" as well for a good newb calling moment. The right information was posted and the person in need ( me ) clearly saw the flaw in the assumptions he was making based on the poor understanding of the conversion system he had.

That was all, the gg was called but you felt the need to boast about the penta kill your team had while you were playing support, just lame.

for those of you who don't understand the concept of bandwidth, think of it as a pipe. The bigger the pipe, the more water... same with bandwidth, and if a lot of people are using the same 'pipe' you're not going to be getting your '5 mb' speed.

I'm sure your ISP said something like this but with different contex and in tiny letters at the bottom of the paper that you signed ;)
