Quote: The infamous red super-giant star in Orion’s nebula - Betelgeuse - is predicted to go gangbusters and the impending super-nova may reach Earth before 2012, and when it does, all of our wildest Star Wars dreams will come true.
The second biggest star in the universe is losing mass, a typical indication that a gravitation collapse is occurring.
When that happens, we'll get our second sun, according to Dr Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland. Full Article: http://www.news.com.au/technology/sci-t ... 5991009247So the Betelgeuse is gonna blow, and we get 2 suns for a couple of weeks Prepare for mass insomnia

Imo it is highly unlikely , we may get a heat wave but not much like a second sun .

Btw Am i the only one who thinks that this will never happen to Earth ? , Not this year and not after 40 years ..

Would be amazing, if it won't have any side effects. And if it's not a BS prediction.

Someone predicted the end of the world last month ( I don't remember when, actually), but we are still alive. So only 40% of me agrees, that there will be a second sun. Would be cool, actually. There wouldn't be pm or am anymore.

Arg you people. They aren't making some "guess" that it may go supernova. It is losing mass and this is an early indicator that the star is indeed headed towards collapse and subsequently supernova status at some point. Judging by the rate of collapse they apparently think it could be soon. This isn't some religious nutjob prediction like someone compared it to above.
Hope it happens in my lifetime.

"with distance estimates in the last century that have ranged anywhere from 180 to 1,300 light years from Earth"
so, this expanding gas/dust/solarparticles/muons/whatever, if it happens tomorrow, is going to exceed lightspeed and break Einstein's theory of relativity to arrive here in 2012?
Cool story bro.

Considering that anything we see happening, has already happened as per Einstein's Theory of Relativity, no.

Cool story bro. what we observe has already happened many light years ago. When we get those double suns, it means the actual thing has already gone supernova 1200 years ago. When the light reaches us, so do the neutrinos. nothing of the likes of breaking the speed of light barrier here.

Yes, I understand, but the word "predicted" throws me off. If we're observing a collapse, that means the light already got here and the event has already occurred. none of this "predicted" shit. If we are observing what we think may be a collapse or supernova, then we won't know for a while, since the measurement varies but seems to be around 1200-1300 light years. Double suns, ha, it'll be a pinprick in intensity compared to the real sun. Sure it'll be visible though. http://news.discovery.com/space/dont-pa ... -2012.html'Phil Plait weighed on the previous Betelgeuse-doomsday scenario last year, and in two paragraphs he puts the danger of Betelgeuse to bed: Having said all that, I’ll note that someday, Betelgeuse will explode. That’s for certain! But it’s also way too far away to hurt us. A supernova has to be no farther than about 25 light years away to be able to fry us with light or anything else, and Betelgeuse is 25 times that distance (which means its power to hurt us is weakened by over 600x). It’s the wrong kind of star to explode as a gamma-ray burst, so I’m not worried about that either. At that distance, it’ll get bright, about as bright as the full Moon. That’s pretty bright! It’ll hurt your eyes to look at it, but that’s about it. The original post says it may get as bright as the Sun, but that’s totally wrong. It won’t even get 1/100,000th that bright. Still bright, but it’s not going to cook us. Even if it were going to explode soon. Which it almost certainly isn’t.' http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/2 ... 11864.html"The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au." http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2376132,00.aspI love how several sources report 640 light years and some report 1200-1300. Anyway. "could be as early as 2012" means shit to me. Show me percentage chances of events occurring in X years so who's right?

I'm not sure you understand a prediction. It states that an outcome is expected, but is not set in stone. Both your sentences don't really make sense. Whether we see things happening from the past or see them as they are happening, if we don't know what happens next we can always make predictions. That's what scientists are doing. They predict that it may happen in 2012 but could take a whole lot longer because of our limiting technology and understanding.
