Are the pay rates really as bad as you guys are saying? $7 p/h? $10 p/h? That's crazy! Sure, it's all relative to the price of living and the value of currency, but here in Australia the minimum wage for someone who's 18+ and working full time (38 hours per week) is around $530 per week, or rough $15 p/h. Most generic labour jobs will net you around $20 p/h and you really don't have to work too hard for it, either. Seeing people on $7 is crazy, I wouldn't even get out of bed for such a low amount of money.

Err, don't have a job but friends, family, and clients recommend me to other people all the time for pc repair/tech consulting/etc. In the past 2 weeks I've built 3 full desktop systems for people and worked on another. At the moment I'm working on a remote monitoring system for a large boat (58 foot Hatteras, basically a yacht) that will involve a central PC that monitors all the boats "vital signs", DC/AC voltages, bilges, blowers, etc. It will also have remotely and locally viewable cameras that the owner can access remotely by phone or a browser. Really cool gig for now.

No "real" job, but I do make decent money. Student loans cover what remains for tuition/living/etc :/

Kinda offtopic, but I was wondering if you've completed your final year at UBCO or do you still go there after the summer? I'll be going there starting September, got accepted to General Sciences :yay: So we'll probably get to meet then :)

Ontopic: Being a student was my job until now but this summer I got into a scholarship with the Canadian 'Air Cadets' to get my Power Pilot License. Get paid 10$/day for getting a 30,000$ scholarship and tons of fun. Thank you taxpayers, I guess :P

No work at the moment as I'm about to finish school (oral exam in five days and then I'm done).
In the university I applied for (and got accepted as well) there is this thing that if you're good enough they can help you get into some business companies such as Unicredit, Ferrari, Vodafone, some other random banks and such straight from your second year.

This really astonished me. I don't know Australia and its economy, but seriously..417$ (USD) per week is like 1.3k € per month as minimum wage. That's quite a lot and you know it. A lot of people here who don't have a steady job can only make 400-500 € per month and hardly make it to the end of the month. Apparently, as you've described it, for every job you get you know you're gonna earn at least 417$ per week.
Let me just tell you that my high school English teacher has been teaching for forty (forty!) years and just this one last year she cashed 2k €. I really don't know what it was like at her starting, but gosh..for sure it wasn't as easy as for you kids in Australia.

Then I checked the tab of minimum wages woutR posted and what do I find? Italy, apparently has got no minimum wage in its policy. How messed are we? /sigh

I'm right there with you honestly. At $8.10 an hour I'm barely making enough to pay bills and have a bit of fun.

$8.10 isn't even Minimum wage in Oregon o.O We get $8.50 Minimum. The Starting wage at a few places in my town is even $10+ with no educational requirements.

$8.00 is minimum wage in California. That $.10 was actually a pay raise after I had been at my job for 6 months.

A bit of a bump here, but I got a call back from a job I applied for on Sunday and I have an interview planned for tomorrow. It's an entry level IT Technician job and I'm absolutely ecstatic about it. Hopefully with a bit of luck it will go well =D

Also, in regards to the minimum wage question you can live on minimum wage in Australia. $570 p/w is quite manageable, you can rent a small 1 bedroom apartment in the right area for around $150-200 per week, in between basic bills and costs you'd have money left over to live. You'd have to limit your spending and you could only support yourself, but it's possible.

Honestly, it's pretty easy here. Right now I work a generic Labour job (unless I get this job I have an interview for :p) and I'm earning $650 per week, or $2600 per month. And that is considered very low. The "average wage" for a full time worker is $64,641 Per year (http://www.emigratetoaustralia.org/aver ... ralia.html) so my wage of $40,000 (before tax) is well below average. Our living standards are really high and even the laziest of people can support themselves without too much difficulty. A lot of people complain about how expensive it is to live here but I completely disagree. With a bit of decent budgeting anyone should be able to support themselves on the minimum wage. Budgeting is the key though obviously, but none the less we are very lucky here.

Oh, and if we are are doing the whole "look how much money I can earn" thing, consider this for a second. I have been offered a position in a coal mine near where I live by my father. The starting wage for an underground miner is $90,000 per year (before tax). My brother works in the mines as a supervisor and, well, take a look at his pay slip for this week. Please note, this is just one weeks wages, he gets a similar wage each week.

Spoiler!

So yeah, in conclusion, if you want money come to Australia and be a coal miner.
