Yes, it sounds like we have it easy in australia, but shit is a lot more expensive here. A brand new m3 is about 180k here. You wont be paying more than half of that for one in america. Have a quick read of this article to get an idea of the difference.. http://theage.drive.com.au/motor-featur ... 1dgy7.html

Basically every car in that article is referring to a vehicle $30,000+. When we are talking about people earning $8 p/h, do we really need to draw comparisons to such cars? I just bought a new car last year, a 2010 model Hyundai Elantra SLX with all the additional features included for $20,000. It's more than affordable. Sure, we may pay "double" the cost for a M3. But how many of us will ever own M3's? And if we could, we'd hardly give a damn about how much it costs anyway.
Sure, cars are just one example. But the Australian dollar is above the price of the American dollar atm. With the handy invention of the internet buying anything just became a hell of a lot cheaper. Buying and importing computer parts are a lot cheaper than buying retail in Australia, for example. Same in regards to any electrical items, furniture items etc etc. This won't apply to some of your larger and less portable items obviously, but with the globalisation of the economy it really does take a lot of those sorts of things out of the equation.
My point is that $8 is just sounds so insane and by the sounds of things it's hardly relative to the cost of living, either.

I think everyone would look quite a lot richer if they worked double shifts. It actually works down to $24 an hour after taxes, assuming a 40 hour work week (which he obviously doesn't have, but still) a coal miner would 'only' make $49920 (if he works 52 weeks per year as well).

You've got it slightly wrong here, actually. The 100 hours aren't the total amount of hours worked, rather the total amount of hours they are being paied for. The shift allowance, which is 35.50 hours, is a mandatory bonus they receive for working their normal week of 35 hours + 5 hours rostered O/T. It's basically an attendance bonus that is calculated on the amount of hours you worked. You don't work the additional 35.50 hours, but you get paid for them anyway. Neat, huh? The total amount of hours that he actually worked his normal week (35 hours + 5 hours O/T) + the amount of over time he did, which in this case is 25.50 hours. (1 x 12 sunday and 2 odd hours every week day). So in reality he is earning the money he earns for doing a 65.50 hour week, as opposed to the 100.50 hour week you mentioned. If we want to calculate it all into a flat rate of pay it equals (roughly) $55 p/h for this week that he worked. And that kind of pay for a simple labour job (it's hard work, but none the less) is absolutely amazing, even if he does work 6 days a week. Even without working any of the non-rostered over time, it's still roughly $2100 before tax P/W. That in itself equates to over $100,000k per year. The mining industry pays some incredibly nice wages, the bonuses you receive and the allowances you get are insane.

Got a summerjob in a mall nearby. It's not a huge place but certainly the largest one you can find around here. The job is simple, I sit in front of the computer mostly, I have to check that prices of shoes, clothes and sports things are listed correctly on their website and I list the new pruducts there, the price, description, producer, importer etc. Sometimes I have to do archiving (the paper work).
The pay is 8€ per hour, its the average ammount paid to 3rd grade mall workers (I dont even know what that means, but its the second lowesst I think, the lowest is the guy/girl working at the cashbox). I do 6 hours work a day, so its 48€ every day, and the best part; I dont have to pay any taxes because its a summerjob. And I get free diner on the nearby fast food place once a day, but I normaly take my own lunch with me, cant stand the smell of over greasy hamburgers and french fries around the place. I have been working for 12 days now, so I got 18 to go (I'll work for 6 weeks only)
But to be honest, im damn sure i dont want to be working like this when i get a permanent job

IIRC, you get a lot the tax money back from all your previous summer jobs too.

Why not? 8€ is a lot for me, for just computer work. Compared with the crappy 7.25$ I get for a freaking and stressing physical work.

Never liked office work, and in here 8€ an hour sounds good, but when it goes from a temorary job to permanent one, you'll have to start paying taxes, and thats not even 1000€ a month (if working 5 days a week, month as four weeks), considering that If i get better education which is kinda easy here (Its not too expensive and we get nice financial aid for our studies. Im in high school but I already get 40€ a month (I know, not that much, but I dont have to basicly do anything for it (as long I study and I get most of my courses pass) neither pay it back. I could stand sudying 5 years at the university to get pay over 2000€ a month after taxes. And I like studying, wins physical work easily.
