Well Valve wanted to be in the competitive scene. With DOTA2 they have that. Yeah TF2 can be, but I guess it died off or whatever. Valve has the money to throw it away like that. With the MannCo store being implemented in every future release game, their sale of games, and of course Steam.

Oh let's not forgot about CS being in the scene. 1.6 was much more popular and lasted longer than Source.

I'd say the larger the better. Attracts more publicity which in turn is much better for Esports in general.

If the e-sports business is a bubble then the more money you invest in short term publicity like this rather than long term sustained growth it'll hurt a lot more when that bubble bursts.

Pretty much. This entire thing is a publicity act. Think about it.

-Free stream
-First gameplay footage
-Played by real players and not the developers for once

I would imagine that there would not be much advertisement after this.



Shh more money for the foreigners

They do have to invest allot of money though to get the competitive scene from LoL and HoN to migrate to DotA2. And thats just what they're doing and they probably succeed.

I'd think a 3 year $400k a year guaranteed tournament plan (about same amount of money as this one stunt), which btw is four times what Riot has every season and their seasons span more than one year, would attract much more pro players over. If they don't have the tournament of their lives at this then there's no guaranteed big tournaments afterwards while LoL still has it's $100k a year thing and mini weekly tournaments. Even if they just pumped $250k a year like I suggested and spent $150k on monthly tournaments ($12k and change a month) with a good prize distribution (40-25-15-10-5/5 payout) then pros know they're guaranteed money for top 6 spots at a tournament every single month and can support themselves with that + sponsorship salary, that's A LOT more incentive to switch then one gigantic tournament with $1 mil split between 5 people and then nothing after wards.

Of course, if they already have huge sponsors backing them up (which, with valve, they obviously do) that can afford this tournament AND promote constant growth every quarter, then that's fine. I just don't want to see them fizzle out into $50k tournaments only after this $1 mil tourney, I'd much rather see $300k tourneys every year so everyone actually still has motivation.

I'm sure they have. If it's closed beta and they release a single screenshot I'm sure they would have gotten their shit slapped so hard. Though if it's a true port they wouldn't need to play it.



It's Valve we're talking about. They have the money. I would expect more tournaments from DOTA2 in the future. With a giant prize pool like that? Of course not. But I do expect it to be relatively 'huge' maybe 200k prize pool every season or something. This right here is obvious that it'll grab the media/internet's attention. I mean look right here. We're discussing it.

They are already playing it, they were allowed to be apart of the beta, and Gabe has said that they are already amazingly good at the game.

True, but what if dota2 is free, but with hats? I would be surprised if they sold this game after their TF2 guinea pig of putting in a cash shop. Might I add which was very successful. A lot of games that are introduced with hats sell about 10,000 copies. Without it? I wonder. Lots of people buy the game just for a hat. Sad, but it's true. Why? The hat's value increases more than the game itself at times.

If dota2 does include the MannCo store I wonder if it'll be somewhat linked up with TF2/Portal 2.
