I recently got a new laptop and would like to maximise its long term battery life. I would like to leave it with the charger in when using it mostly and have been googling to see if that would effect the battery. There are mixed opinions of some saying that it does no harm to the battery and others say it is better to drain the battery full charge repeat. I would just like it if someone here could clarify how leaving a laptop fully charged laptop with the charging in will effect my battery.

Thanks

Whatever you do, do something at least.

When I bought my Dell laptop a few months back i kinda forgot about this and just start using it right away and charged it after an hour.

Ever since i only got max. 1 hour battery. Which really really sucks.

I think you got to drain it first yeah.

I am a bit confused on that myself.

Some say that you shouldn't charge the battery until it gets too low and that keeping the battery in the charger for long times after being fully charged shorten the battery life.

While others say that the battery gets hurt when only charging it when it is too low and that keeping it in the charger is better for the battery life.

Maybe use it tell it gets 0% for the first couple of times, then put it in charger later, IIRC letting the battery reach its "end" at the first couple of times can help boost it (used to be like that on old phones, lol).

After a few times it doesn't affect the battery life anymore if you keep it in charger or not afaik.

From personal experience:

When you put the battery in the charger for extended amount of times, it doesn't hurt it or boost it.
I have the same HP laptop for +2 years now and most of the time (like 90% of the time) i keep the battery in the charger and so far i don't feel any difference in the battery length.

The battery can still survive +2.5 hours (Hardly felt a change, it used to be between 2.5 and 3 hours).

Frequent charging kills a battery over time. Mine was down to 45 mins max at full charge.

Some laptops have settings so that you can have your laptop plugged in and the battery won't charge.

Am i the only one that got his battery working fine :O

Well, i only use the laptop charger when using the laptop, so multiple hours a day don't hurt the battery as it seems.

But when i am not using the laptop, i remove it from the charger and turn it off.

What if I let it die to 0% weekly and then fully charge it, and besides that just leave it in the charger?

With my new laptop in the instruction manual they said. To maximize your battery time at first is to fully charge and deplete it three times. You should always charge it fully when you get it anyway. Mine is about 1.5 months old now and I still got the same battery life as before, 1.5 months isn't much though so yeah xD

I only have it plugged in when I play games (as it improves performances and I need it to prevent the laptop from shutting off after 30mins lol). Besides that I rarely have it plugged in. While typing this I got 84% left and wont plug it in untill I either start a game or it's down to ~10% (where you get that message).

Judging by my first laptop I'd say having it plugged in 24/7 is what ruined the battery life. Oh and your biggest battery time killer (no matter how well your battery is) is your screens brightness ;) Turn that down quite a bit and you should be able to double the time you have on it while doing the same thing.

thanks, i have depleted it once now and will do what you said. also when i first got it i fully charged it to 100% but as it was charging i was on it browsing the web and downloading. will this effect long term battery life?

Having about 4 or 5 laptops in the family could help with this haha.. We had one laptop which was 24/7 plugged into the TV and charger for about two years it was never taken off the charger.. Now it lasts about 5 mins without charger, my netbook is always on and off for charging sometimes its not charged for a weks end because i dont use it, now its been charging for a week because i left on vacation... Battery life lowered from 4hours to about 2.75 in one and a half years...

I've had my laptop for more than a year now, and it is the same as it was when I got it.

Most laptop batteries these days do not "overcharge" or w.e they call it. When the battery reaches 100%, it stops the charge. If your are using the laptop while it reaches 100%, it will still not use the battery, the power supplied from the outlet will be running the laptop.

Mid charging is fine too, but it is advised to drain the battery. I mid charge a lot and my laptop's battery still works well.

It's completely different, some say that the more charging cycles your battery has, the less it lasts. The others say if you keep it plugged in all the time, it's life will be reduced greatly.

So i don't know what should i do myself, lol. :sohappy:

I do more than frequent charging , i almost never plug the charger off (Plug off, is that even a word o.o) while using the laptop.

Unplug is the word you're looking for. :sohappy:

exactly, so many mixed opinions. i will just drain mine 3 times then leave it charged... see how that goes.
