Thread had to be done. I've never been one to get caught up in the book/movie hysteria that comes and goes, but I was talked into reading the Hunger Games trilogy by some friends... Boy am I hooked and excited about the upcoming movie.

Anyone here read the books and/or excited to see the movie? They are easy reads, entertaining, and addictive. Highly suggested reading before the movie comes out March 23rd.

So much more epic once you've read the book and know what's going on.

Quote:
The Hunger Games is a young adult novel written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September 14, 2008, by Scholastic.[1] The novel is the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy.[2] It is written in first person and introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem where the countries of North America once existed. The Capitol, a highly advanced metropolis, holds absolute power over the rest of the nation. The Hunger Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle in which only one person can survive.

Halfway through the 3rd book. I doubt the film would ever catch the rawness in the book but still going to see it. Although I do get annoyed at some parts of the book, mainly due to the whole romance/friendship crap, but then I remind myself that the author is a woman.

Meh.. It doesn't really matter who wrote the book. But seriously.. there's nothing wrong with a bit of Romance/Friendship crap!
Well, what's so wrong with that? lulz

I'm not saying it's a bad thing in general. There's just several portions in the series where you feel like you're reading a fucking Twilight book (never read those but I'm guessing it would be that sappy, petty, and annoying).

All the girls at my school are reading the series, including my three younger sisters.

The movie trailer does look good :D .

Don't know about the books, as I haven't read them. But the movie trailer sure looks freaking awesome! I'm definitely going to watch this one :)

I'm really struggling with this final book. This bitch has at least two severe anxiety attacks per chapter. Really getting annoying. :banghead:

Just the other day I thought about reading a book, but then i read the comments about how it's like twilight so i think I'll pass. I've never read the lord of the rings series, so maybe I should get to that first.

Yeah, I've just started on "The Hobbit". Mainly because I wanted to finish it before the movie is out :)
Afterwards I'm off to the Lord of the Rings series.

Not really like Twilight, but having a female author and protagonist, I guess it would be difficult to avoid that. No huge surprises and the "twists" are quite predictable. The main character is the center of attention -- all the fucking time -- complete with a team of fans, advisers, lovers (spoiler? not really), and human pets. The plot is a brainless convoluted mess of a teenage girl's idea of "action/adventure" and a pile of goat feces. The first two books have some of these elements but they're quite forgivable, but that does not go for the third (or maybe you just get fed up as you're forced to swallow more of this crap). Since I'm a bit past halfway through the third book, where all this shit really begins to come in full force, I might as well either finish reading it or guess what the ending is. Reading "Mockingjay" feels like going through a teenage girl's fantasy diary while an electric fan continues to blow shit onto your face. Graphic but pretty accurate.

So what is a book that you can recommend? I'm not much of a literature buff and I like low threshold books (not ashamed to admit that I love the shit out of Dan Brown books).

For a heavy read, I'd say something from Kurt Vonnegut. For something entertaining, witty, slightly serious and also fun to read, Chuck Palahniuk. If you want something new, I've been reading 1Q84 books although that's an either love-it or hate-it type. It's surreal, foreign, and often times, grotesque but it keeps you interested. I never read A Song of Ice and Fire books but they've been getting good reviews and I've been meaning to read them for a while now. His Dark Materials series is also a good read if you like stories like Harry Potter or other light fantasy/adventure books.

Eh, I've read the first Hunger Game's book. I loved it. But from what I hear, the second book is equally as good, and the third one sucks. So I'm a bit hesitant to continue reading them.

That, and I may wait to watch the first movie, before reading the second book. Just for shits and giggles.

Do want and will read the books if it lives up to the hype.

Shit happened :(

I finished reading the first book and then I went to my folder with the kindle files of the three books and chose the second in the folder, which was mockingjay. I started reading and I was confused, but I kept reading for a few pages. Now I know what's going to happen. :'(

On a side note, the trailer gave me chills. It's a great feeling when you read a book and then see it portrayed in the theaters. Lets just hope it's good.

Haha this is how I felt. I watched it before I read the books and was "meh, cool, will watch". After reading the books and watching it I can confidently say I've become addicted and can not wait...

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt. I saw Katniss differently, though. I don't find this actor very fitting to the image I had of her.

I just wish I could erase my memory now and enjoy the second book fully.

LOL. Ouch...

I finished the 3rd book a week ago and I have to say, the 2nd half did make up for the first few chapters of non-stop mental breakdown and romantic crap. For some reason though, most people disliked Mockingjay because of the concluding chapters whereas I believe that's really what made it even worth reading.

LOL

I read all three books last week and I kind of agree with the twilight comments. The protagonist is often described as striking and in certain outfits even beautiful. She's strong an independent but also vulnerable and prone to crying...a lot. The two males are also described as handsome, good looking, fit, etc. There's the good guy and the bad boy so of course she flip flops between which one she likes best about every other chapter. The story doesn't completely revolve around this though but by the time the you get to the third book it's really worn you down and you start to wish one or all of them would die, preferably all of them so that we don't have to hear the others angst about it.

That aside the books are fairly short and to the point. With each book the author pushes the plot forward slower and slower which isn't a good thing because this type of book is best when it's moving fast which is why the most entertaining parts are the combat, not because of the actual combat but because it creates a situation where there isn't a lot of time to stop and think about all the personal drama and bullshit that infest every other part of the book. Despite the combat being the best parts the futuresque traps and surprises often force you to suspend your disbelief which is ok when it comes to Sci-fi but it causes you to focus more on weird thing that just happened than the fact that kids are killing kids/ being murdered for entertainment. Battle Royale is far more grounded in that regard so the characters and their deaths hit closer to home.

I wouldn't not recommend the books to anyone and I will be seeing the movie but I don't know if I'll stick around for the sequels if they turn those into films.

you can see the dress she wears in the interview in the trailer and it looks nothing like the way it was described in the book =/

Perhaps. I had one patient call the cops on us before because of an anxiety attack lol. I actually have crisis intervention training and I deal with people's anxiety attacks almost every day and I still think Katniss' bitch fits are a lot more annoying.

well a fear of going outside does mean you get to play a lot of video games :) it just sucks when you dont though lol.
i get angry at myself more then anything i guess other people would find it less annoying as they dont have to read about it in a book ^^

Kind of off-topic but well..

Then either your therapist went the wrong direction or you're completely unwilling. The way I see it, you either help someone develop better coping mechanisms on top of existing ones or teach them the basics first. As far as learning how to interact with others, your best guide would be a very patient and understanding friend and crowd. The therapist can be there on-call but it's all up to you whether or not you'll let other people lend a hand. You can take all the Ativan you want and attend every session on schedule but don't expect other people to do all the work. They can only curb you to the right path and give you a nudge but never carry you across.

You can start by not visiting 4chan too much or at least not obsess yourself over every internet meme out there; starting, of course, with that Boxxxy avatar. I know it's important to be part of a community but the people of the /b/ boards isn't actually the group you'd want to be part of unless you want to remain a shut-in, socially-awkward, anxiety-attack-prone individual.
