Netherlands not out yet....If they can demolish Portugal and increase their goal average from -2 to say +2 (Which means a 4-0 win over Portugal) and hope that Germany demolishes Denmark then they're still in it.......I might be puffing pixie dust with that line of thinking....
Anyways my team (Spain) is playing well and I'm delighted to watch them play. The "Pass Masters" are doing great and I am happy. Love to see the game play with such style and finesse while rooted in the fundamentals..

Its shitty that Russia is out based on the "head to head" rule rather than the traditional goal average decision.... Russia and Greece were tied on points and Russia had a better goal average but still didn't make it through just because they lost 1-0 in their game with Greece..

I don't follow soccer at all, but doesn't that make perfect sense? If you're tied with a team, shouldn't the deciding factor be how you did against that team in a prior match?

Conventionally (and still) it was the goal averages that decided once all group stage games are over and you look at the stats between two teams with equal points...It seems with this tournament they used head to head to decide...Which I never heard of..Got me by surprised

Well it seems the Netherlands got the ole 1-2-3 knock out punch... I'm surprised seeing has how that team is swimming with talent. They were placed 3rd on the list to most likely win the tournament and rightfully so since they have such a good roster of players and good track record....I don't understand why they lost every single game in the group stages and are now out.

What up? Everyone bashing CR, there you go. I'm proud of him, he made up for his mistakes in the game against Denmark.
Great game for Portugal, hard to believe how poorly the Netherlands has been playing.

I don't really watch football, But since all the players are scrapped together from different teams... Isn't it because they're not used to playing together? I watched the NL vs DU game and NL played terrible. They stood still when the ball was near, didn't cover anyone. Always ego-played. When they passed they always gave it to the guy that was surrounded by 3 germans instead of the guy up there in the edge that was completely free... It made me remember why I hate watching football... I always end up screaming and raging at my TV cause the players never play the way I want them to D:

Its roughly the same set of players that made it all the way to the world cup finals 2 years ago. These guys also had to qualify for this tournament so that's more playing time and training together as team..

I dont get it, i thought it was first based on Goal difference, and then head to heads. Is that what u mean by "goal average"? poehalcho wrote: I don't really watch football, But since all the players are scrapped together from different teams... Isn't it because they're not used to playing together? Well all these played together 2 years ago in the world cup, got to the finals..with the same coach. I think they are out mainly because of either not giving a shit (or overconfidence- they were one of favorites to win it..), or going through a bad patch for some players (Van persie)

Ya when I said goal averages I mean goal difference...Just like you I thought they would consider goal differences as the deciding factor but as you can see with Russia it wasn't...I woke up and look at the standings and was quite confused when they said Russia is out...

the problem is that robben's head is so large it actually weighed down the team. he thinks his status is so high he can carry the team -.-
however his head is nothing compared to ronaldo.... damn i hate that guy so much -.- he needs to be hit with a bus to knock sense into him

Don't know man, not to me. Past games are past games. Should be based off the other stats (shots on goal or what not) of the current game instead.

if germany beat denmark 1-0 and holland beat portugal 1-0.... germany would be top of the table and the other teams would have: same number of points same goal difference and head to head wont work 3 way
also denmark beat holland so they would go thru... but portugal beat denmark... so they would go thru.. but holland would have beated portugal! so they would go thru?
so it would have been down to fifa ranking... holland make it to world cup final and would have still come bottom of the table -.-

^Yea i was really hoping for that scenario just to see what would happen lol.
I always thought it was based on points, then Goal difference, then head-head.. thats how it works in the leagues, thought it would be the same for Euros/World cup..

funny thing is.... holland would have been at the bottom of the table, even though they went to the world cup finals they were still ranked below denmark? i dont really understand what would have happened but all i know is that holland would have been eliminated then.
