How do you deal with really lazy roommates?
My roommate never does anything around the house and it makes me feel like a woman having to nag about him doing dishes and cleaning up. Even if he does the dishes he'll just rinse everything and not even wash the bottom of the plates ("You don't eat from the bottom").
I've tried making arrangements about cleaning up, but he never does a good job when he cleans up and just says it doesn't bother him and why should it bother me. When it's cleaning time he has to "ease into the day" and spends 2-3 hours behind his pc before doing anything.
It's starting to really piss me off and I don't like living in a mess and having to do everything myself.
We share an apartment so it's not like I can choose to only clean up my own stuff. So... wat do?

Make like a contract which you make him sign. It has to contain both the chores and consequences if he doesn't do them. If he doesn't want to sign it then get the house owner to step in?

Yeah if it has come down to the point of a contract, it's probably your best choice.
One of my friends had to make her room mate sign a contract as well.

There really isn't anything you can do about it, because you can't kick them out of the house. My cousin had the same problem, but eventually we got him out by threatening him lol. it was the only choice left.

He's been one of my best friends for almost 10 years now and our rent agreement isn't really conventional. His parents own the house and we both pay basically a maintenance fee (250 euro each a month for an entire apartment in the city center, just a room is usually 400+). There are no contracts because the apartment is also for sale and if we have contracts the sale would be severely impeded for the parents (Dutch law stuff).
So yeah.. no contracts. He's my friend so no threatening either. Just trying to find a diplomatic solution.
I'm currently thinking about talking with the parents, but it feels like such a bitch move to do. Don't think I have any other options though.. :(

No need to tell me it's not the brightest idea to live somewhere without a contract, I know.

I was afraid he might've been your best friend or something. Talk to him about it, otherwise, it sounds like you're knee deep in a shitty situation.

Well, maybe your "lazy roommate" really has no idea he is acting inappropriately.

Assume from that part he probably brought it up more than once.

When I was talking about a contract I did not mean an official lease contract, but more like a personal one between you two where you set up a few rules. More or less like the room mate agreement in the big bang theory (but you know, like normal people and not Sheldon style). Talking with his parents (aka the house owners) would be a good idea too if he's not willing to agree on a contract like that.

If y'all really are best friends, then go cuss him out and tell him to get his shit together. He won't get offended, for more then a few seconds, and he'll probably actually do it.

I mean, you know, assuming you're as close as you say.

If he is your best friend, he should understand and do his part.

Invite the parents over for a "surprise inspection". If his parents have dignity, they'll be ashamed at the lazy nature of your son and get his ass into gear.

I've obviously spoken to him about this more than 20 times. His arguments range from: "it doesn't bother me" to "you knew what you were getting into when you came to live with me". I've told him it matters to me and it bothers me, and his suggestion is that I should just do it myself if it bothers me so much.
I know that with this information you'd consider him a poor friend, and feel free to tell me this, but that's not gonna get me a clean house. He's a lazy motherfucker, but he's been my bro since day 1 of high school.

The surprise inspection is not a bad idea. I'm guessing I have to involve the parents anyways since my comments are ignored.

1st, show him this thread. The voice of the majority is the voice of the truth

2nd, counter the laziness with laziness => use something that he usually uses and don't clean it, or put all the dishes into his room and loudly say "it doesn't bother me".
