So, I was raised in a Jewish home. Where working on the sabbath (Friday night and saturday) was forbidden. Having been indoctrinated as such, I never have worked on either day. But lately, I'm starting to wonder if I should start working on those days. Money's tight, and it'd help quite a bit. (At minimum wage thats like an extra $100 a week x 30 years = 80k dollars.)

Now, my problem is trying to decide if working on the sabbath would violate my morals, or just my indoctrination. So I guess I want to know what y'all think. Would working on the sabbath be a bad or good idea?

I'm undecided.

lol morals.
If you need money bad enough then pick up the extra days.
At least you're fortunate to work someplace that allows you to have the days off for Sabbath.

Come work at Nissan in Smyrna if you need the money, we'll put you to work. ;)
[You'd never get a Friday or Saturday off, though]

Don't let your morals be dictated by your religion.

Reminds me of bill maher "Christians dont look over at our neighbor mowing the lawn on Sunday and think 'working on the sabbath? i really should kill him'"

I know that feel. I was raised the same way, saturday being the sabbath. Only I had a broken home, my father was killed, and my mother was atheist, so what little structure I had was from my grandparents. So my philosophy on the issue is a little more laid back. I don't adhere to it completely... but no man is perfect, and I do try to keep it when it's possible.

Either way, I don't judge a man based off my beliefs. At the end of the day, you're going to do what fills your most desire and I suspect you're here for a justification. The lure of extra money will beat out the belief that keeping the sabbath is the right thing. We all walk a different path in this world, and we aren't always going to come to the same conclusions.

It wouldn't really be a problem if I wasn't in college. I just kind of hate having two days in which I don't make any money, and I'm not in class.

Yup, had the same moral dilemma when I was deciding whether or not to be a prostitute. cpinney convinced me it was for the best, and he became my pimp, never looked back.

Sociological indoctrination being used to define morals?...You don't wanna hear my answer... At least you seem aware of it so that's a plus in my book...

Yeah i was confused as to how working on a saturday is morally wrong/right but obv he meant religious/cultural dilemma

If it was a special religious/traditional day I would take the day off but seeing as its basically every week I dont see the point. Then again i am not christian/muslim/jew

I read a story about that in the Quran before, was about a Jewish fisherman who was poor and he couldn't go to work on Saturday so he'd leave his net in the sea and collect the fish in Sunday, and then god punished him.
In my opinion it depends on how faithful you are, if you're not too faithful that you'd regret doing that later and feel bad about it then go ahead.

A man must do what he needs to do to survive. Simple as that. The level of action is related to the circumstances in which one's livelihood is under threat. The severity of the action will be dictated by a man's ability to forget or regret.

As some of them already said, if I were a Christian/Muslim/Jew I wouldn't work on some special days, but two days every week? I don't really think it would hurt, and don't worry, there probably isn't such thing as Biblical God, maybe there is a creator, but he doesn't care if some Diffenderfer works on friday and saturday nights.

Why is it "forbidden" to work on the Sabbath?

7th day is a day of rest. No work of any form is suppose I be done. It stems from creation when god supposedly "rested" on the 7th day.

Thanks for the advice. Going to talk to my dad, who just so happens to also be my pastor, and see what he thinks about it before I do anything.
