Wowza, never thought this would happen anywhere else other than California.

It's cool that people are finally getting more reasonable, but that's kinda far from me so, meh.

If I were to guess, weed will be legal in most of the country by 2020.

Michigan (my home state) is probably going to be one of the next states to be legalized, we tried to get it legalized this year but fell short on the petition.

Quote:
The current initiative proposes a fully regulated system of cultivation and sales, which will eliminate the underground marijuana market and generate tens of millions of dollars per year in new revenue and criminal justice savings. It also directs the legislature to regulate the cultivation of industrial hemp, a versatile, popular, and environmentally friendly agricultural crop.

This would mean that these two states will have a more "legal" way of dealing with the sale of marijuana than states like California. Also, there are 14 other states besides California, Washington and Colorado where marijuana has been legalized for medicinal use and/or decriminalized.

It seems to have been legalized in Michigan but only for terminally ill patients such as people with HIV, cancer and Hepititus C. They are even allowed to grow up to 12 plants.

If all you get out of this law is that you'll be able to smoke weed legally, and you don't realize how important this case is going to be for America, you probably smoked too much weed already. haha

This is going to be another case which will define the state's powers, and hopefully the states will win this battle. You also have the side effect of lessening this "war on drugs" bullshit that has caused so much pain in this country.

I'm sure that isn't all anyone gets from it, other than the people you described.

You are correct though. This will define individual state's powers and hopefully have some sort of effect on this country's debt.

It will be interesting to see how the state handles the cultivation and distribution and also how the product will be sold throughout the state. I also wonder what kind of precautions they will put into effect to stop these crops from crossing state lines.

I don't think it's going to be much different from the way they regulate cigarettes and alcohol, two things that are much more dangerous.

I'm hoping that the regulation and taxation is wildly successful so that Canada has a reason to follow suit. The amount of cannabis this country consumes illegally is staggering, if the gov't was getting a cut of the profits our deficit would disappear.

PA doesn't have single anything on weed. So sad. Though philadelphia reduced the punishment for carrying less than an ounce to a fine instead of jail time. Saved millions in prosecution.

FYI companies can keep their policies on drug use. So if your company says no weed, even though you work in those states, they can still fire you. Have fun.

For smoking on the job maybe. I doubt they can tell you what to do in your free time. Its not like companies go around testing people if they drank alcohol in the last month.

I have wondered about this because of the states that already allow people to smoke, like California. In most super stores they have a policy that if you get injured on the job you are subject to a drug test within a few days of the incident. If you are found with any type drugs in your system or alcohol you are likely to get fired because they figure you were on drugs at the time of the accident. Now, how do these states deal with this? Do they still have these policies in place, even though it is considered medicinal?

I'm not sure how corporations work, but I work on an Air Force base and since it's a government institution, weed is still illegal on a federal level meaning if I get injured and have to take a drug test and they find weed in my system, I'm no longer eligible for any sort of compensation, and I'll probably lose my job.

I live in California and I have my medical prescription card.

In Australia, anyway, a lot of industries have regular drug tests and will fire people based upon the results. I know from personal experience that in the mining industry if you are caught with weed in your system than you could very well lose your job. One of my fathers co-workers went over to Bali on holidays, smoked while he was over there, had to do a drug test when he came back and was sent on a "rehabilitation" course as punishment. Pretty pathetic really, but that's just the way it is.

Yes, someone in Michigan? I think it was there, he had a prescription for medicinal marijuana, job required him to get tested after some kind of accident, got fired.

Even with a prescription, you aren't exempt from your company policy.

I wonder if that will change if the drug is legal on the federal level, but that is a discussion that might not happen for many, many years.
