Communism was a fantastic idea (by the idea only).
For about 50 years communism reigned here in Romania too. The idea of equality is attractive by itself. But equality means lacking private proprierty. This is where and why communism failed lammentably.
In china, it still thrives, because the goverment has taken measures to make a sort of market economy, but still under the strict control of the sate.
My 0,02$ about communism.
Not entirely true. There are forms of government which are similar to communism. The Zionism government in Isarel after WWII gave the country a great economic boom, which created racial tensions we see today. I forgot which country (Norway or Sweden) the citizen gives 96% of their income to the government and the government uses the money to run the country and provide many services. Both example are however in small scale.

China isn't really communist anymore, the regime is deviant.
Though I don't agree with certain policies. Like the 'Only one child per couple' rule.. i mean there's gotta be a more subtle solution then putting people up for abortion every day.
China is a cool country, they're growing economicly, an we'll all be learning chinese in a couple of years.
The 1 child policy was implemented because if the birth rate wasn't controlled, the population would boom and China would be unable to feed itself.
And its doing a great job by feeding themselves with not having to import 90% of their agricultural needs.
