Soo...

School started quite a while back, and I'm a Sophomore in High School now. At first, I was taking European History AP for my third period class, but the course is in its first year - it hadn't ever been offered before, and combined with the fact that the teacher is a bit of a dummy that can't take control of the class (nor organize for that matter), it made for a very chaotic scenario indeed. I had an 89 in that class when I dropped out, which was decent (a 4.4 GPA out of a 5 point scale), but I still ended up dropping out for Wrestling.

I'm so behind. I don't know what's going on, even though I've been here for a week or so.

Can anybody here give me any pointers? Know anything about high-school wrestling? Even the damn point would be fine, because the Coach is never around (he's also coaching Senior High, so he's only here for third period), and since there's Basketball in the morning, and Football and some other sports in the afternoon, there's no tutorial / make-up session, which makes for a fena looking very silly on the mat trying to perform a chin hook.
TBH, I got the build. The wrestling coach came up to me twice last year asking me to join, as I had third period PE. He saw me and then... checked me out, lol, in the way that athletes do each other, and said that I'd make a good wrestler. So that's what inspired me to join this year, along with the fact that I think it's going to help me buff up. I'm willing to work. I just need some pointers.

TL;DR, or can some of you lovelies here help me?

Thanks!

You should master one move after the takedown so you know how you're going to try to get them on their back. Just work on your conditioning and you'll get the technical stuff down eventually. Personally I wrestled because my friend did. I have to say after season was over I was sportin a six pack. I lost most of it freshman year of college but now I'm getting back into shape. I guess you could say the point is getting in shape, having more confidence, making friends, having fun. But if you're not having fun try something else.

I would never drop an academic class for something like that.

But have fun wrestling.

TL;DR.

But throughout my high school, wrestlers were basically considered gay by just about everyone I knew. Just want to let you know that's what you'll probably end up dealing with.

That's okay because if anyone starts anything, you can use the skills and techniques of wrestling to defend yourself. And if fena has much ignorant people in his school as yours does I think it's a shame. The only misconception wrestlers got in my school was that we were conceited and below average (grade wise) students.

The problem with that is high school wrestling is nothing like a standing street-fight. Yeah my friends might've been ignorant, but hey they're my friends.

Well there's an advantage wrestlers have. A standing street fight will always be taken to the ground where they know how to fight. Most high schoolers (non-wrestlers) wouldn't know how to sprawl anyway (judging solely from my high school experience). But hey if someone can stop a takedown without having wrestled, kudos to them.

You're right though, friends are friends. One of mine thinks homosexuality is wrong and he says he would put them all on an island and let them kill off each other (aids). That's the only fault of his I can think of though.

Oh yes, it is a shame. Most people are shocked when they find out that I'm wrestling. Half of those people think I must be gay, and a fourth even come straight out and ask me. I've even had two guys that asked me if I was gay the first day of Wrestling, after I dropped out of EHAP.

But I do it because of the reasons that Locketart said, among others. There's just some sort of primal aggression that feels great to release, every single time I throw someone to the mat.
Not to mention we get cool shirts. :]

Anyway...
Locketart, you were talking about sprawls. I think we went through that briefly in class. Is that when someone tries to take you down, and then you push down on his head and force it down to the mat?

Also, I heard the Coach say something about three rounds in Wrestling. How long are these rounds, how do you win one, and do you start standing up on each one? We haven't gotten around to actually wrestling / scrimming yet. All we do is drill, drill, drill. Mostly outside pop-ups and a bunch of things the Coach calls the Knee Series. I still don't quite get the big picture.

And what the hell is referee's position? :?

Yeahh, lol. My best friend Jeff has ALWAYS thought that he could kick my ass. In elementary school, he was really tall, and really chubby, so, yeah, he could. Through middle school, he lost quite a bit of weight, but still didn't have much muscle. In 8th grade and 9th grade, I started packing on quite a bit of muscle, and while he was lean, he wasn't that strong. But he's still larger than me, and every single time we debate about who would kick each other's ass, he's always like, "Dude, don't even kid around. I could kick your ass."
And just today, he came up to me and was like, "Dude, you wanna fight?" And I was like, "Lol, I'd throw you to the ground." And he stared at me for a second, and was like, "Yeah, you probably could."

:]
Oh, and thanks. Could you answer the question I just asked, though? :P

3 rounds 2 mins i think, to win you either gets points or a pin.
certain moves gives u certain points, a pin is when you are chest to chest on the floor. if u get a point on him the oppenent with start in ref posion.
um knee series might be diffent moves like double A's or single A's ect ect.
anything else?

Referee position is hard to explain, just ask someone to show you in practice. You win by points or pin. As long as your opponent's shoulders aer touching the mat for 3 seconds you can pin them in any way. Someone on my team got pinned while the other guy was standing up. Whoever has the most points by the end of round 1 starts on top of referee position in the second round. I forget if it was the same thing for 3rd or you switch based on 2nd round.

Probably kick normal people's ass but not people who are truly train self defense and take it serious.
But those people would never provoke someone in the first place.

LOL @ Nuklear. Made my day.

Anywho, in the middle of this thread Locke you said a street fight would go to the ground right? Well the few street fights I have been in or have witnessed were over in a few seconds. Once someone gets punched it's usually over seeing as the got punched into sanity.

If let's say that randomly does not happen and it goes to ground level ... you seriously think a wrestler has an advantage? Sure in the gym a good wrestler is a good wrestler, because there are rules. But on the street there are none, so expect to be groped, twisted and possibly stabbed.

Not trying to offend any wrestlers here but the only thing that will help you on the streets in a fight is bare knuckle boxing. Even karate ninja shit won't do any good if a 385lbs guy comes running at you with fists raised.

there's a saying in wu shu called 'qi ping shi li san ping ji qiao'
meaning '70% power 30% skill'. Those people who thinks they are really skilled in whatever self defense if you power is still too far behind you will still lose but on the basis that your power is close your skill may bring you victory.

But what you said is a bit harsh especially at this stage when someone just took up wrestling.

I know, hence the "I'm not trying to offend". It's mainly for people who think if they learn to wrestle in school they can win street fights based on their knowledge. Which is ... bleh

depends on the style of wrestling they learn. I forget the name but i believe Brazilians have a style of martial arts that involves alot of punches and alot of grappling and its very effective against larger opponents. And i don't care how big a guy is if you actually study martial arts you shouldn't have problems....

I was pretty much talking about high school fights in my post. I don't expect much out of high schoolers. I think that if you put a football player and a wrestler in a fight, the wrestler will win. That's from my experience in high school. I saw a basketball player get beat up by a wrestler. But I guess if people get stabbed in your school, it's a real shame. And I'm sure any good wrestler knows a few illegal submissions they can't use in matches.

Stabbed in street fights .. not in school. In school I couldn't give 2 shits what went on. But I have witnessed knives being pulled by chavs in fights. So w/e.

I know a guy who,s a dealer, sometime he get into fight, even if he's not 350 lbs he do fine, but the only time he got his ass beated like hell was against a guy doing like 130lbs... the guy was doing karate or some shit like this... <_<

but yeah in a street fight there is no rule if the guy feel like biting ur ball to avoid getting his arm broke he'll do it...

Replace the big with a strong.
Most serious trained martial artists will tell you otherwise.

and I think you were talking about capoeira the most well known Brazillian martial arts-dance but it's focus aren't about grapples or punches, but kicks.

I used to instruct Judo, to little kids anyways. In it's most simplest form, it's wrestling but with clothes on. I found the trick to winning was to be fluid and, I guess, tolerant. When he pulls you, you push him; when he pushes you, you pull him. This only only amplifies your strength, but it allows you conserve your energy; near the end when he's tired, you'll be in a better condition to hold your pins or break out of them.

When it comes down to having to pin someone to win, it's better to stay passive and reactive until you can easily take him down.

what you said is called the 'you gang you rou' concept (thats wat its called in shuai jiao) of having hard and soft to make the hard 'amplify' in the soft.
Basic but useful concept, however from what I know scholastic wrestling is quite different from shuai jiao in many ways
