Original Problem:

Quote:
Hey guys I am really at my wits end here as I am usually able to fix any problem that I am faced with but this really does baffle me.

I have played silkroad a while back and stopped for a while for a break from constantly grinding :). However because of various reasons I had reformat my HDD recently and start from scratch (yey clean windows that does not take 5 mins to load :) ). Now I have decided to rejoin with the expansion it has had on to try it out again.

So here is my list of what happened on the day I decided to reinstall:
Download the 900mb client file - Done
Install the Client - Done
Load the Launcher - ARGHHHHHHH *Monitor through the window*

So the problem I have is the launcher always loads and then shuts down again, usually staying longer when it first runs or on a fresh install. Now I have used process explorer and found that it runs very quickly and then goes again and is replaced with the windows error logger process.

Now I have tried everything I know how. I have reinstalled different clients from different sources, I have disabled all security software when installing and first running, opened up router firewall for the program, used CC and regedit to clean out old silkroad values that could cause it to malfunction and even installed it on another drive to no avail.

I could really use some help with this as the answer will prob be very obvious to someone (hope linus's law is right :) )and if you would help I would be forever indebted to them.

Thanks

System Specs
2 meg RAM
8800 GTS Graph card with latest driver
AMD 64 processor
Windows XP Home SP2
About 1 year since I started work on it
Hard Drive Reformat Prior to Problem

Solution (Thanks Monkey)
Quote:
1. click start
2. right click My Computer
3. click properties
4. go to "Advanced" tab
5. go to the Performance options
6. go to "Data Execution Prevention" tab
7. select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
8. chuck in silkroad.exe and sro_client.exe in the list

Well, you have the same exact specs except the processor than me. (Yay, 8800 GTS FTW!)

What I would usually tell people to do is reinstall it. However, you already did that. I am not entirely sure what this error is tied to but I'd suggest trying to change the video options in the start menu when the client launcher comes up. Instead of clicking 'Start' click 'Options' and change those around. Maybe that'll do the trick.

Next, well, there isin't really a next. Your problem does baffle me. It could have been something that stuck in your HD from the reformatting or after the reformatting. I'd really love to help you but thats all the advice I can offer right about now. I'll Google stuff like this maybe I'll find something for you about this issue.

if you ever do get your launcher to load you can go to ur task manager and check to see how much memory SRO is taking up. sometimes you will see 0 cpu usage which is bad lol and its glitched so you have to reopen. Something that has worked for me is if the loader pops up and the little rectangle is just sitting there in the middle of your screen go to task manager go to process right click on SRO and set its priority as high. hope this helps :D

Hmm, this is puzzling, so let's try and approach this. Your on a fresh machine and it's got very good specs, so I would rule out a hardware issue or an OS issue (unless your RAM or Video RAM is dying, try something else graphic intensive). You've tried different clients from different sources, so it's not Silk Road itself. That leaves me questioning the connection between your computer and SRO's servers. You've already tried all the work arounds for it being your firewall. I'm reaching here, but what if your IP was in a block that got banned? I don't know too many ways to test this. You could try renewing your IP address (if not sure how just ask). Depending on how large your ISP is that might not work as you could just get another IP in the same block. Another option is just try to connect through a proxy server (there are free ones on the 'net), gaming would be too slow to play, but it would tell you if that was the problem if it connected. If you know someone else that plays that lives nearby, you could verify that they could connect with their PC, then ask them to bring it over to your place and connect with your ISP and see if they encounter the same problem. I'll keep trying to think of other possibilities.

Ok I narrowed it down a little. I have run my PC in safe mode with networking and SRO works and loads fine, meaning its a software conflict somewhere.

Still need to find what one but here is the list of all processes (BTW all svchosts check out)

Thanks

I don't see anything there that looks out of place to me. I'm sure you've already tried turning stuff on and off. First one I'd try is TeaTimer, maybe SRO tries to write something to a temp file and it won't let it :?

Another thing I thought of that I run into on newly installed systems, is WinXP from a fresh install has a limit of 10 concurrent connections (security to prevent worms from spreading). You notice this kind of thing on torrents. So if you've got Firefox running that's one connection, AVg updater is another, Windows Update is another. It doesn't look like you have 10 open connections, but I can't tell what everything does. If your at the 10 limit with other apps running maybe that's why SRO won't load, but does in safe mode? There is a patcher that will run a batch file that will allow you to raise the number of concurrent connections to greater than 10. Just Google lvl lord patch, it's not a virus, even though your antivirus will probably say it is, I've used it for a long long time on many systems with mine set to 99 current connections, it's necessary for file sharing. You could try that. Again, I'm just throwing ideas your way, maybe something will help you think of an answer. :banghead:

Truez for the rescue :D

Nice, u reformatted ur system ... couple of things u gotta check beforeu can proceed.... not sure if you have already done it, but nothing wrong in double checking

1. Check if all ur drivers are installed correctly,
HOW? simple,
a) START > RUN > (open box) type in control > hit Enter
b) In control panel, go to System, Hardware Tab, Device Manager button.
c) Now check for all drivers that has a YELLOW QUESTION MARK, sometin like tis :?: or and exclamation mark, sometin like tis :!:
The ones with :?: means that these drivers are not installed in ur system .....
The ones with :!: means that these drivers are not installed in ur system correctly, so try uodating them.....

2. if your drivers are all installed, then ur in a problem... go get a beer :D

Lolz ... keep us posted, v will figure out someting

Oops, sorry my bad, I didn't read the whole article as I was pressed for time and got interrupted. This is why I don't do troubleshooting on the weekends, no free time.

No sorry. I have been going through every obscure method I know of and still yet to find anything at all. I just wish DrWatson would tell me the conflicts...

Ok, found another thread with someone having the same issue here. The solution that they attribute to it fixing the issue though doesn't make sense to me, deleting the Messenger file from Program Files, although there could be some conflict I don't know about. The fix is the last posting of the thread.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/archive/in ... 97111.html

I looked at your list of running programs and it doesn't show Messenger or any other IM client running, so don't know how much good this will do you. But since everyone is stumped, I'm just feeding you whatever information I can find.

If you do ever find a fix, please post in here, cause I'm curious as hell.

Sorry for late reply but I shall tell you what I did. Because using a VM (virtual machine) killed itself because of windows I simply decided to change my OS and duel boot with Linux. Works great and I have had Linux use before. Once that was installed I put in graphics drivers and wine and now it works like a charm (ironic considering it is supposed to run on windows).

However if you do not know what you are doing then I do not recommend you go installing it on your PC because you stand a really good chance of messing it up.

If you want to try (and I really can recommend it Linux is so much better than Windows...No seriously it is) then I would run through these prerequisites:

-Do you know what Linux is?
-Do you know what a partition is?
-Would you feel OK with learning a command prompt for advanced tasks (BASH)?
-Can you back up your data?
-Are you the only one using your computer?

If you answered yes to all of these then you know what you are doing and go ahead. Here are some good guides to learning how to install Linux (Ubuntu in this case (which is probably the best if you are a novice and like GUIes)

I just read this... even though you've fixed it by using wine, if people still want to use windows , try to see if this works:

1. click start
2. right click My Computer
3. click properties
4. go to "Advanced" tab
5. go to the Performance options
6. go to "Data Execution Prevention" tab
7. select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
8. chuck in silkroad.exe and sro_client.exe in the list

Well after that I tried the method (thinking that I tried that before) and it works for windows. Well it took around 3 months but I got there.

Thanks for the help you guys have given and now I have a duel boot SRO system. Thanks a lot and if this thread can help anybody else then it was worthwhile.

Thanks!
